Aldis lamp is named after its inventor, Arthur Cyril Webb Aldis, who designed the portable version used widely by the British Navy and eventually adopted as a global maritime standard.
All ships of over 150 gross tonnage, as well as all passenger ships regardless of size, when engaged on international voyages, must be fitted with a daylight signalling lamp.
