Oil gauging tapes are called “sounding tapes” because they are used to perform the maritime technique of sounding, which is the act of measuring the depth of liquid (oil or water) in a tank from the bottom up. The term derives from the historical practice of lowering a weighted line to “sound” (measure) the depth of water, a method adapted to gauge the liquid level in ships’ tanks by feeling or hearing the weight strike the bottom
A sounding tape also known as a dip tape or oil gauging tape, must be accurate, durable, and calibrated, typically featuring a brass , stainless teel or steel tape with a weighted bob and secure attachment to prevent dropping into tanks. They are essential for manually verifying fluid levels in tanks (fuel, ballast, fresh water), ensuring proper calibration for trim and list, and preventing spills.
