Sounding Tapes

Sounding Tapes also called tank dipping tapes, made of steel or stainless steel with a brass dip weight attached, used to measure the liquid level in tanks in the marine and oil industries.

  • Material with steel (white and black) or stainless steel
  • Length with 10m, 15m, 20m, 30m and 50m
  • Dip weight (Bobs) with various types
  • Light plastic frame or sus frame
  • Metric and inch graduated

Oil gauging tapes are called “sounding tapes” because they are used to perform the maritime technique of sounding, which is the act of measuring the depth of liquid (oil or water) in a tank from the bottom up. The term derives from the historical practice of lowering a weighted line to “sound” (measure) the depth of water, a method adapted to gauge the liquid level in ships’ tanks by feeling or hearing the weight strike the bottom

Description

Introduction:

A sounding tape also known as a dip tape or oil gauging tape, must be accurate, durable, and calibrated, typically featuring a brass , stainless teel or steel tape with a weighted bob and secure attachment to prevent dropping into tanks. They are essential for manually verifying fluid levels in tanks (fuel, ballast, fresh water), ensuring proper calibration for trim and list, and preventing spills.

Structure:

  • Tape Blade/Ribbon: A long, flexible strip made from high-tensile materials like stainless steel, carbon steel, or brass. It is graduated with precise markings, often in both metric (centimeters/meters) and imperial (inches/feet) units.
  • Dip Weight (Weighted Bob): A brass heavy weight attached to the end of the tape to ensure it sinks vertically.
Cylindrical Bobs: Typically used for lighter liquids like water or diesel.
Torpedo/Conical Bobs: Used for thicker, viscous liquids like heavy oil, as the shape penetrates the surface more easily.
  • Tape Frame: A rigid frame (often ABS plastic, SUS or brass) that houses the coiled tape.
  • Winding Handle (Crank): A handle used to manually deploy and retract the tape into the housing.
  • Connector/Hook: A secure attachment (often a strap hook or snap) that connects the weighted bob to the end of the tape blade.
