Commercial vessels carry float-free 406 MHz EPIRBs (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons) as part of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) to signal distress via satellite. New requirements (MSC.471(101)) for units installed on/after July 1, 2022, include mandatory GNSS (GPS) and AIS capabilities for faster localized rescue.
